Easy Readers
Reading is both a lifelong joy and a complex skill that takes consistent practice to master. To avoid frustration and foster a positive experience, our Learning Support team recommends this strategy: When your child makes an error, let them finish the sentence before reacting. Then, say something like: “One of the words there tricked you!” and go back and find the “trick word” together. Keeping it fun and friendly will ensure your child builds skills while maintaining a love of reading—and it reduces stress on grownups, too!
Early Chapter Books
Longer Chapter Books
The family read-aloud is the perfect opportunity to reinforce your family’s shared love of books and reading. Tip: Choose books a bit harder than your child can read independently. Then, when it feels natural and right, take the opportunity to teach new vocabulary words your child might be unfamiliar with. Reading aloud is a pleasure we recommend continuing into Middle School. Here are some of our favorites.

We recommend continuing the family read aloud through Middle School. It’s the perfect opportunity to reinforce your family’s shared love of books. These books make great family read-alouds, and are just right for readers ready for longer, more complex stories.

FAQ's
Collection Development Policy
The McGillis School Library collection is professionally selected to meet the information and entertainment needs of K-8 students, and to support the School curriculum. Because the collection is designed to meet the needs of a wide variety of students, not all library materials will be suitable for all students. Parents and guardians are the best guides for their children and are encouraged to ask their children about their book selections, and to visit the library. The librarian is delighted to help you and your child find books that meet your family’s needs.
Intellectual Freedom Policy
In this Community Conversation we discussed how to build a lifelong love of reading and how books can be used as windows and mirrors.
The McGillis School's Tikkun Olam One Story at a Time Author Series focuses on the work and stories of authors of diverse backgrounds and experiences. During the 2021/2022 school year, students will meet Kelly Yang, Kekla Magoon and Saadia Faruqi, as their share their books and personal journeys as authors of color.
May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and our students are celebrating by reading great books.
Last year our school librarian, Heather Novotny, served on the Robert F. Sibert Award Committee, which honors both the author and illustrator for the most distinguished informational book for children.
On Friday, February 5, The McGillis School was honored to welcome award-winning author Carol Boston Weatherford and acclaimed poet and artist Jeffery Weatherford, who is Carol's son.
