B.A., Spanish Teaching, University of Northern Iowa
M.Ed., Collaborative Teaching and Learning, Graceland University
M.S., Educational Leadership, Drake University

Jim was born and raised in Iowa. He couldn't wait to explore other parts of the country, and education has taken him to five different states as a teacher and school leader in public and independent schools. Jim enjoys following his Iowa Hawkeyes and is a big Chicago Cubs fan. The oldest of four boys, Jim grew up playing ball every summer and organizing neighborhood games. Jim enjoys hikes with his family, the Sunday morning paper, coffee, and chocolate.

Jim loves to learn and follow trends in education, and he appreciates the times he is able to plan and lead faculty and staff meetings. Jim and his family love Utah and feel fortunate to have discovered McGillis.

I am currently reading:
Tribe of Mentors by Tim Ferriss

Favorite McGillis lunch:
Greek chicken gyros

What do you think makes McGillis different?
McGillis actively lives and continuously practices its values, which promote humans being good to one another. Learning is more than academics. Learning is a journey that helps you discover yourself and realize your capability to do good in the world. McGillis shows students they are capable of great things and empowers them to great things.

How are you reimagining learning?
I need to reimagine what it means to "meet". I want to explore how to make a Zoom meeting more meaningful to all participants.

The defining moment that lead you to your career in education:
I traveled to Spain for two weeks in my junior year of high school. Upon my return, I knew I wanted to study Spanish and become a teacher so I could introduce the world to my students. I have been in education for my entire career.

Which McGillis Value do you most appreciate?
Kehilah. We all have a human need to belong with someone, at someplace, with some group. McGillis would not be what it was without a strong focus on and consideration for those who are a part of it.

What is your superpower?
Organization. It gives me confidence that I'm ready to handle whatever comes my way.
