Bio:

Andrea grew up in Wisconsin and has lived her adult life in Utah. She has over 20 years of experience in education, including classroom instruction and reading tutoring. Her passion for helping struggling readers led her to certify as a Wilson Dyslexia Practitioner, and she is honored to be part of the McGillis community.  When she’s not reading for her own enjoyment and learning, Andrea can be found hiking, cooking, gardening, working on home improvement projects, and spending time with family.

Favorite McGillis lunch:

Chicken Gyros

I am learning to:

meditate

I am currently reading:

fiction: Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng

non fiction: Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom by David Blight

Favorite McGillis tradition:

Definitely tree planting so far.  I'm not sure if this will become a tradition, but I hope so.

Which value do you most appreciate?

Tikkun Olam. All the McGillis values are so important, yet I think this one really sets our school apart. I love that children here are learning to be community minded and participate in activities that contribute to making the place we live better, not just for ourselves, but for others.

The defining moment that led to your career in education:

I don't have a single moment, but I believe in learning for the sake of learning, and I feel honored to participate in facilitating the learning process for children. It's exciting to see them start to recognize that they can do hard things and feel pride, not just in the accomplishment, but in their efforts and in the process. When they realize that they can apply those skills and knowledge to other areas too, it's exciting.
