Ethics & Culture Teacher - K-8
The McGillis School, an established, independent K-8 school in Salt Lake City, Utah has an opening for an Ethics & Cultures teacher beginning August of 2023.
This position will teach Ethics & Cultures to all grades through the unique lens of our School’s Jewish values, culture, and traditions.
The goal of our Ethics & Cultures classes is for students to develop the skills to navigate the world with Derech Eretz (Respect for all), to practice Gemilut Hasadim (Doing good and kind deeds), to strive for Tzedakah (Giving to others), to be a responsible member in their Kehilah (Community), to embrace Limud L’shma (Learning for the sake of learning), and to develop a commitment for Tikkun Olam (Repairing the world).
This position will also be an integral member of a team tasked with planning the programming and community education for the School’s Jewish values, culture, and traditions, and will lead out on programs specific to McGillis (ex: Shabbat, Family Groups, Jewish holidays, and Ethics-in-Action days).
Candidates will demonstrate a capacity for best teaching practices and enjoy working with a range of grades. Candidates should be collaborative, flexible, and generative in nature.
Ethics & Cultures Teacher Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding children as a priority.
- Develop well-reasoned lesson plans and units; collaborate with grade level teams and other specialists to develop an interdisciplinary and multicultural curriculum.
- Teach Ethics & Cultures to three grades each trimester; will teach all grades over the course of the academic year.
- Teach a 6th grade elective course for one trimester (topic TBD).
- Differentiate instruction within a heterogeneous classroom.
- Manage a positive and structured classroom environment.
- Communicate proactively and consistently with families and colleagues; conference with families twice yearly; complete progress reports each trimester.
- Lead programs specific to The McGillis School (ex: Shabbat, Family Groups, Jewish holidays, and Ethics-in-Action Days)
- Meet regularly with a team to discuss how best to educate faculty/staff and the broader community about the School’s Jewish values, cultures, and traditions.
- Participate in weekly faculty meetings.
- Engage in professional development opportunities, as well as in the professional growth model specific to The McGillis School.

Integrative Studies Teacher - Middle School Humanities
The McGillis School, an established, independent K-8 school in Salt Lake City, Utah has an opening for a Humanities teacher in our Integrative Studies program in the Middle School, beginning August of 2023.
In addition to a demonstrated capacity for best teaching practices and evident joy in working with Middle School students, candidates should be collaborative, flexible, and generative in nature. Teachers of science, humanities, and writing collaborate constantly to plan and implement a dynamic curriculum that makes explicit interdisciplinary connections. The curriculum evolves annually, and requires critical thinking and creative problem-solving for students and teachers alike. As such, the role requires an educator keen to work closely on a progressive interdisciplinary team including humanities and writing teaching colleagues. A willingness to learn about and create innovative, integrated curricula is essential.
Integrative Studies Teacher Responsibilities:
- Develop well-reasoned lesson plans and units in close collaboration with colleagues.
- Meet weekly with Integrative Studies and departmental colleagues to engage in the collaborative planning process.
- Apply various effective, research-based instruction and assessment techniques.

- Participate in co-curricular program opportunities specific to The McGillis School (Family Group, Shabbat, Advisory, etc.)
- Participate in at least two multi-day school trips annually.
- Serve as a Mentor to a small cohort of Middle School students.

Lower School Teaching Assistant
The McGillis School, an established, independent K-8 school in Salt Lake City, Utah has an opening for a Lower School Teaching Assistant beginning August of 2023. This position is 35 hours/week, typically Monday-Friday, 8:15-3:15 PM.
The role of the teaching assistant is to provide support to students throughout the school day. Assistants will spend time working in the two classrooms that make up a grade level and will work in collaboration with both lead teachers to build a community of learners who respect and care for one another.
This position reports to the Lower School Director and works closely with students and families, as well as Lower School Faculty and Staff.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding children as a priority.
- Work with students in small groups, individually, or as a whole class.
- Establish familiarity with the overall program and related resources and materials in order to assist in facilitating learning experiences with students.
- Assist in the general supervision of classrooms, lunch/recess/playground, and perform duties as assigned by the classroom teachers.
- Foster positive and meaningful student interactions and relationships.
- Complete tasks assigned by lead teachers to maintain the classroom environment, materials, and documentation of student work.
- Value and incorporate diverse perspectives in daily student interactions and within the program.
- Attend faculty meetings and professional growth opportunities as required.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience working with preschool or elementary age children in a school setting.
- Patience, energy, and physical stamina.
- A willingness to learn about, reflect upon, and support a dynamic learning environment.
- Flexibility and adaptability to meet the needs of the children and program.
- Ability to maintain confidential information.
- Ability to work and communicate well with all levels of faculty and staff, students, and families.

Middle School Spanish Teacher- Part time
The McGillis School, an established, independent K-8 school in Salt Lake City, Utah has an opening for a part-time Middle School Spanish teacher, beginning August 2023.
An ideal candidate demonstrates:
- Enthusiasm for working with middle school students in various capacities outside of academic teaching.
- Energy, flexibility, and commitment to working with students inside and outside the classroom.
- A commitment to collaborative planning, research, and analysis/reflection of best practices of teaching and learning.
- Experience and training with comprehension based teaching strategies, e.g. TPRS and/or a willingness to become proficient with and use comprehensible input methodologies.
- Familiarity with ACTFL language proficiency descriptors and an ability to design instruction and assessments with can-do statements in mind.
- A strong background and experience teaching students with comprehensible input in Spanish language and Hispanic cultures.
- A graduate degree in related subject area, teaching or educational studies, or equivalent professional experience is preferred.

- Familiarity with culturally competent teaching.

Substitute Teacher
The McGillis School is seeking highly motivated and enthusiastic substitute educators to work with students in grades K to 8 on a per diem basis. Certification and 3-5 years teaching experience preferred. The most desirable candidates will also be able to demonstrate proficiency using digital and online platforms for remote instruction as well as proven effectiveness as a classroom teacher in a brick-and-mortar setting.
Job Responsibilities will include:
- Willing to be contacted for coverage the morning of placement
- Must be able to work the full school day of 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- Support the teacher by implementing the daily curriculum for assigned grade level
- Create and maintain a positive, structured learning environment
- Collaborate with other teachers to ensure a safe environment for all students

AfterSchool
The McGillis School is seeking awesome individuals to join our AfterSchool Program for the 2021/22 school year. AfterSchool staff assist in facilitating a safe environment that supports social, creative, and academic growth for students Kindergarten through 8th grade. Staff members will collaborate with co-leaders and the AfterSchool Director to foster an environment that best supports the needs of students and allows them to grow beyond the classroom. These positions are part-time and can be tailored to fit within a school schedule or additional job. Applicants should have the desire to work with children, be self-motivated, and creative.
Duties include:
- Manage a safe environment by constant monitoring
- Engaging groups of children with pre planned games and activities
- Assist students with conflict resolution and support when necessary
- Respond to student needs with understanding and acceptance
Communication Skills:
- Possess a warm and friendly tone when communicating with staff, students and parents.
- Address challenging situations with a calm, appropriate attention
- Quickly learn the names of students, parents, staff and fellow educators.
