The heart of our school campus is the former Douglas School building on the corner of 1300 East and 700 South, which was originally constructed in 1915 by the Salt Lake School District.
In December 2002, the McGillis School purchased the Douglas School property from the district and immediately began the process of renovating the facility for occupancy in August 2003. The historical building has been upgraded with new HVAC, plumbing, electrical and technology service, doors and windows, and lighting. It has also been retrofitted to comply with today’s seismic safety code. With its high ceilings, large windows, and spacious classrooms, the building provides a warm, safe, and inspiring environment for learning.
The school was named “The McGillis School” in recognition of local philanthropists Joanne and Richard McGillis, whose generosity enabled the school to purchase the campus and restore it to meet modern standards of safety and comfort.
