PROGRAM:
The Middle School Physical Education program is team, and individual sport based with exposure to lifetime activities. Instruction is progressive in skill development, and includes basic rules and strategy for a variety of different sports. Differentiation occurs in grouping and skill drills. Students participate three times weekly for an hour-long block. The sports may include: soccer, basketball, flag football, futsal, lacrosse, volleyball, badminton, ultimate Frisbee, pickleball and baseball/softball. An emphasis is placed on the importance of keeping our students interested, active, and involved in physical activity, while at the same time developing sports citizenship and character through the challenges of competition and physically attempting and learning new skills.
GRADING:
· Class Participation (90% of cumulative grade). This includes proper dress and active, engaged participation.
· Skill development: (10% of cumulative grade) Evaluation of progressive individual skill improvement through consistent effort.
EXPECTATIONS:
· Students arrive to class dressed appropriately (in uniform and with athletic shoes) and on time. Each trimester, students are given three chances if they forget their uniform/shoes. Each subsequent non-dress after three, will result in the drop of a half-grade. (Ex. Four non-dress days = A-, five non-dress days = B+ etc..)
· Students will be expected to provide a note from a parent excusing any participation due to illness or injury, and will require a note from a physician if those days go over three consecutive days.
· “Active participation” is defined by an honest effort given by the student to the best of his/her shown ability, AND actively listening while being given instruction.
· Middle school students will be dressed in athletic, closed-toe, non-marking sneakers and issued P.E. uniforms. Coats, sweatshirts, and hats for sun are acceptable for outdoor units.
· Respect will be shown toward both classmates and teacher at all times. There will be an emphasis on sportsmanship in all drills and games. No exceptions.
· Students will take care of equipment and facilities.
