Math

The McGillis School math program consists of carefully planned and facilitated hands-on learning opportunities using manipulatives and transitioning towards more abstract reasoning skills as the children develop intellectually. Children work cooperatively to discuss problem-solving strategies as they apply new concepts. Students are encouraged to consider and share different means of arriving at answers to mathematical questions.

Students at The McGillis School articulate their problem solving strategies and algorithms both verbally and in writing to help reinforce their own and others’ understanding and application of math concepts and enhance their ability to problem solve. Students develop skills in the major strands of mathematics, including number sense, measurement, geometric sense, probability, and algebraic sense. The mathematics curriculum is congruent with national mathematics standards established by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
