The McGillis Athletic Program will:
1. Include a large number of students.
The McGillis School believes in the importance of athletics in developing well-rounded young individuals, and we encourage all of our students to participate in the athletics program. In addition to contributing to physical fitness, athletics are a fun and healthy extracurricular outlet. Through competitive athletics, our students learn important life skills such as teamwork, commitment, sportsmanship, responsibility, persistence, and leadership.
2. Build unity, camaraderie, and investment in school spirit among students in each grade.
In sports, as in the classroom, theatre, and arts' studios, students' skills and abilities will vary. We expect all athletes to provide leadership within their teams, and we require all of our athletes to respect and support one another regardless of skill level. While playing time may vary from player to player, every player who is fully committed to a team will have a meaningful role on the team.
3. Help develop the athletic skills of every player.
In the classroom, we are committed to developing every student; we make that same commitment to players in our athletic program. Students mature physically at different rates. For this reason, we introduce beginner athletes to sports, develop intermediate athletes into advanced athletes, and challenge our very best athletes with the hopes of preparation for Utah High School Athletic Association competition wherever they may matriculate forward.
4. Achieve the proper balance between athletics, academics, and family commitments.
To ensure that our student athletes have time for schoolwork and family obligations, our coaches have reasonable expectations in terms of practices and contests. We expect our students, in the classroom and on the athletic fields, to try their best during the time they spend on a subject or a sport.
